{"id":4358,"date":"2017-04-06T07:40:49","date_gmt":"2017-04-06T07:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffpicks.eglibrary.org\/?p=4358"},"modified":"2017-04-05T13:41:31","modified_gmt":"2017-04-05T13:41:31","slug":"victoria-a-novel-by-daisy-goodwin-and-victoria-season-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffpicks.eglibrary.org\/?p=4358","title":{"rendered":"Victoria: A Novel by Daisy Goodwin and Victoria: Season 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4376\" src=\"https:\/\/staffpicks.eglibrary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Victoria-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staffpicks.eglibrary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Victoria-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/staffpicks.eglibrary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Victoria.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>I knew very little about Queen Victoria.\u00a0 The various Queens Elizabeth are much better known to me, but I am very glad I watched the <em>Masterpiece<\/em> show on PBS.\u00a0\u00a0Daisy Goodwin wrote the TV show and also the book.\u00a0\u00a0Having seen and read both, I would recommend you do the same.<\/p>\n<p>Queen Victoria was quite small, under five feet tall.\u00a0 She was imperious, and while an era is named after her, she was not the fierce little old lady I was expecting.\u00a0 Her ascension to the throne happened when she was young, and many in power at the time tried to control her.\u00a0 She was determined to rule wisely and make her own choices.\u00a0 Jenna Coleman does a remarkable job in the title roll of the show, and if you look at pictures of Victoria when she was young, there is a good resemblance.\u00a0 The show closely follows the book, but it is still enjoyable to check out\u00a0them both.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Melbourne is the Prime Minister and the Queen&#8217;s first love.\u00a0 Lehzen, Victoria&#8217;s governess, later advisor and companion and Dash, the dog, also lend support.\u00a0 Of course we must mention Prince Albert, also a fascinating character with an interest in modernization and his own difficulties being married to Royalty.\u00a0 With politics, romance and history, this coming of age story is most enjoyable.\u00a0 So do read the book and also see the DVD of season 1.\u00a0 Some scenes were deleted from the original Masterpiece TV show, so it may be preferable to watch it on\u00a0DVD if you are able.\u00a0 And God save the Queen!\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.uhls.org\/iii\/encore\/record\/C__Rb1675542\" target=\"_blank\">Request a copy.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I knew very little about Queen Victoria.\u00a0 The various Queens Elizabeth are much better known to me, but I am very glad I watched the Masterpiece show on PBS.\u00a0\u00a0Daisy Goodwin wrote the TV show and also the book.\u00a0\u00a0Having seen and read both, I would recommend you do the same.
