Jamaica “Jam” Gallahue was devastated by the death of her British exchange-student boyfriend, Reeve.\u00a0\u00a0Unable to function after her loss, Jam was sent away to a therapeutic boarding school in Vermont.\u00a0\u00a0The Wooden Barn wasn’t a psychiatric facility, though, but more of\u00a0a buffer zone for teens who were too “fragile” for normal high schools. \u00a0Upon arrival, Jam learned that she had\u00a0been selected to be a student in the coveted Special Topics English class with Mrs. Quenell. \u00a0Her roommate, DJ,\u00a0found\u00a0it grossly unfair since she even wrote a letter begging for admission to that class, though she\u00a0admitted that she\u00a0didn’t even know\u00a0what made\u00a0the class so special. \u00a0No one ever did\u00a0except for the select few who took\u00a0the class each time. \u00a0The students who took\u00a0the class always formed such an incredible bond and gushed about how much the class\u00a0changed their lives, and DJ wanted to be a part of that. \u00a0When Jam and her classmates started their journal-writing assignment at the beginning of the semester, as a\u00a0supplement to their\u00a0in-depth study of the works of Sylvia Plath, none of them had the slightest clue what they were in for. \u00a0But, soon, they would find themselves wrapped up in the mystery of a place they called Belzhar,\u00a0which helped them explore their lives before whatever made them “fragile.”<\/p>\n
I picked this book up for a “short” reading break, and I read more than half the book. \u00a0I had to stop reading to eat\u00a0dinner and to read bedtime stories with my kids,\u00a0but I couldn’t stop thinking about Belzhar<\/em>\u00a0and had to finish reading it before I could go to sleep that night.
