{"id":2485,"date":"2014-05-15T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2014-05-15T09:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffpicks.eglibrary.org\/?p=2485"},"modified":"2019-04-04T15:58:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T15:58:00","slug":"looking-for-alaska-by-john-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffpicks.eglibrary.org\/?p=2485","title":{"rendered":"Looking for Alaska by John Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/catalog.uhls.org\/iii\/encore\/record\/C__Rb1239025\" alt=\"Looking for Alaska\" width=\"164\" height=\"248\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It seemed a bit too clich\u00e9d to write a review for TFiOS\u2014otherwise known as <em>The Fault in Our Stars\u2014<\/em>as the film adaptation will be released in less than a month.\u00a0 So instead, I\u00a0will review <em>Looking for Alaska<\/em>, another masterpiece from the brilliant mind\u00a0of\u00a0John Green.\u00a0 It\u00a0was his debut novel, but it delivers as many brutal truths as those that followed in its wake. <span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">In this particular tale, Miles, our\u00a0protagonist, leaves <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">his Floridian home<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">\u00a0behind to attend a boarding school in Alabama\u2026 in search of\u00a0&#8220;a Great Perhaps.&#8221;\u00a0 Miles, you see, collects &#8220;last words.&#8221; (Foreshadowing, perhaps?) <\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">\u00a0Note Exhibit A:\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">\u201cFrancois Rabelais. He was a poet.\u00a0 And his last words were, &#8220;I go to seek a Great Perhaps.&#8221;\u00a0 That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m going.\u00a0 So I don&#8217;t have to wait until I die to start seeking a Great Perhaps.\u201d<\/span> Introducing\u00a0a\u00a0concept such as a\u00a0Great Perhaps so early in the book is part of Green&#8217;s genius. \u00a0It hooked me.\u00a0 I bet it has hooked you. I bet you are already reserving your copy so that you can find out more about this Great Perhaps.\u00a0 <span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">What I tell people when they ask about John Green is this:\u00a0 He is the <\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">master<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> of the one-liner. \u00a0Even if that one-liner takes a paragraph to develop&#8230; even\u00a0if that\u00a0one-liner is, in fact,\u00a0actually a paragraph in length. <\/span> <span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0Note\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Exhibit B:\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">\u201cI walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane.&#8221;<\/span> Miles is, of course, talking about\u00a0Alaska here, but Green&#8217;s words are simultaneously so personal yet so\u00a0universal that you feel you are that hurricane\u2026 or that\u00a0you are the drizzle in love with the hurricane. \u00a0Or that, all weather aside, you know <em>exactly<\/em> what this guy is talking about because you have experienced it in your own life. <em>Looking for Alaska<\/em>\u00a0is fearless in the way it addresses\u00a0the sensitive issues\u00a0young adults struggle with on a daily basis.\u00a0 There is no sugarcoating here, or crunchy candy shell.\u00a0 There is only\u00a0The Truth\u2026 or the version(s)\u00a0of The Truth as seen through the eyes and minds of Green&#8217;s thoughtful and honest characters.
